For Authors

MANUSCRIPT GUIDELINES

Formatting

Manuscripts should be double-spaced, in Microsoft Word format, and use footnotes rather than endnotes.

Style

Text and citations should conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (21st ed. 2020) and The Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed. 2017).

Article Length

Authors should provide a word count, including footnotes. The Law Review has a strong preference for accepting pieces between 10,000 and 25,000 words (including footnotes).

Gender-Neutral Language

The Law Review encourages the use of gender-neutral language.

Fair and Full Citation Rule

Research shows that women and authors identifying with minority groups are often under-cited for their work, which can cause disparities in professional settings and opportunities. In an effort to combat these disparities, the Law Review cites the names of all authors, translators, and editors in the first full citation of a work in an article. “Et al.” is only be used in subsequent short-form citations.

Graphical Features

Any images, graphs, or charts must either be grayscale or convertible to grayscale. If your article has equations, please ensure that the equations are already grayscale, in picture format (where the picture is no longer editable by the Law Review), and readable.

SUBMISSIONS REVIEW PROCESS

Submissions Via Email

If economic or extenuating circumstances prevent authors from submitting through Scholastica, we are happy to accept submissions via email at lawreview.articles@lawnet.uci.edu. Email submissions should be sent as anonymized Word documents and must comply with all other formatting guidelines.

Anonymous Review

The Law Review seeks to publish the highest quality of work without consideration of the author’s identity. The Law Review will complete an anonymous review of the articles. The Law Review strongly suggests removing any identifying information in the manuscript, including author name and contribution footnote.

DIVERSITY STATEMENT FOR THE UC IRVINE LAW REVIEW

The UC Irvine Law Review affirms the democratic and entrepreneurial spirit of its founders as it strives to balance tradition and innovation, “to consider—and reconsider—the standard assumptions about law review success.” Recognizing the persistence of historical inequities in the legal profession, we are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, both in membership and scholarship. Diversity in membership enriches our culture and fosters greater learning opportunities in legal education. Diversity in scholarship promotes historically underrepresented authors, ideas, and perspectives in the field of law. Mindful of these purposes, the UC Irvine Law Review remains dedicated to continual evaluation, reflection, and innovation in all its endeavors.
